Description:
This iconic modernist home in an area of outstanding natural beauty is surrounded by natural woodland, and adjoins ecologically and environmentally sensitive National Trust land. It is an ingenious design which sits harmoniously within its sloping site in the Surrey Hills. It has Full Planning Permission and the planning officers and Surrey Hills Design Panel agree that the design is of the highest architectural quality. Significantly there were no objections to its successsful planning application. The vision from the front is of a low built cutting edge design clad in locally sourced oak and pristine white render. It is discretely located behind an earth bearm, extensive screen planting and gabion wall made from local stone are positioned to create a landscaped courtyard in front of the house. On its opposite, south, side the house has extensive glazing overlooking its garden and the beautiful Surrey Hills beyond. Here, working closely with landscape architects Armstrong Bell, we have created a garden surrounding by natural woodland without harm to existing specimen trees. Extensive living rooms and state of the art kitchen are provided with floor to ceiling glazing that can be slid aside to open the split level living areas to the leafy south facing gardens. Bedroom suites all provide for his and her dressing rooms, and separate bathrooms. The sustainable design includes porous paving (SUDS) discrete photo voltaic cells on the roof, grey water recycling and air to air heat pumps

Description:
Much of the built environment in Elgin Road is of poor character with very little by way of distinctive materials or colour palette. There is a significant opportunity here to develop a scheme that will give a considered high quality urban environment to Elgin Road We propose three linked blocks each three storeys high accommodating a total of 9 apartments comprising one 3 bedroom apartment, 7 two bedroom apartments and 1 one bedroom apartment. The dwellings will comply with GLA Design guidelines and will be built to Code Level 4 for the Design of Sustainable Homes. The apartment blocks will be located towards the front (Elgin Road) side of the site They will be modernist in style with flat roofs and they will be clad in a combination of white synthetic render and timber cladding. These materials will not compete with the solidity of the surrounding frontage buildings and we will use London stock brickwork for boundary walls. The entire frontage of the site will be provided with a high quality boundary treatment comprising a low brick wall with piers between which will be located high quality decorative black railings. This boundary treatment will include a landscaped strip within the site approximately 5 meters wide that will be planted at regular intervals with trees of a species to be agreed with the Local planning authority, the objective being to create a tree lined ‘London’ Street where none currently exists. An active street frontage will be ensured by locating the main entrance into the development centrally in the Elgin Road boundary and by providing a dedicated entry to the south of this for cycle access. Pedestrians will access the apartments by entering the main entrance in Elgin Road and that will lead to a pedestrian footpath running between the apartment blocks and into the body of the site. This in turn will give access to the stair and galleries that serve the dwellings at each level. All front doors face onto these external galleries that will be sheltered by canopies from precipitation but open at the sides. Vertical planting will be used to soften these access routes.

Description:
The redevelopment of the existing Operations Building at Colworth Science Park will provide work and laboratory spaces for food technology start-up companies at the Colworth Science Park. The proposal is a refurbishment and extension of the Science Park’s now vacant former Operations Building and will integrate several existing structures into the proposal. The existing Operations Building, a mismatched collection of adjoining structures, has been added to and changed several times over the years. These buildings are currently connected to the adjacent Grade II* listed Colworth House by an unsympathetic Annexe. The proposal is to demolish the Annexe link building, restore the south façade of Colworth House, and landscape the area to allow the Grade II* listed building to sit independently in a parkland landscape once again. The resultant form therefore is two separate buildings – one historic and one contemporary – independent of one another, but both facing on to the central green landscape that is the heart and focus of the Colworth Science Park campus and masterplan. On the Operations Building site, the proposal is to retain as much of the existing steel structure and concrete slab as is practically possible and for this to be integrated into the structure of the new building. At the centre of the scheme is an open plan space set within the shell of the existing steel “shed” structure, measuring approx. 70m (l) x 14m (w). This space is the heart of the facility and provides breakout space, open plan workspaces, networking space as well as a central stepped area that can be used for presentations/demos/displays, a café and a shop. Wrapped around this central space are individual lettable units in a range of sizes to accommodate different types of enterprises and different functions. The units can be arranged as research lab spaces, test kitchens, office or write-up spaces as required. Some of these units are fit-out within existing retained structure (especially to the south and east), whilst some are new build areas (especially to the north and west). The main entrance of the building is to the north, where the building curves out to face onto the green which sits at the centre of the masterplan for the Colworth Science Park. The overall proposed GEA is less than that of the existing buildings. The building aims to be an exemplary example of sustainable construction. Most of the existing structure of the Operations Building will be reused, daylighting will be optimised, and the building will have an enhanced, well-insulated thermal envelope. Proposed façade materials will be efficient and sustainable, whilst sympathetic to the historic setting. The design proposal is based on a modular timber façade with a stone or brick base and standing seam pitched metal roof.

Description:
We will repair the Ennismore Street side by consolidating the gap in the terrace when viewed from Ennismore Gardens to the north. Our proposals will enhance the significance of both the Brompton Conservation Area and historic buildings found within Brompton Square terrace, by successfully consolidating the view to the square from Ennismore Street and Ennismore Gardens. The design respects the hierarchy of both the facades and the terrace grain of Brompton Square. It is grounded in a detailed understanding of the heritage significance of the Conservation Area and listed buildings

Description:
Grade 2 Listed, 2000 sq ft. apartment remodeled to create a spectacular kitchen/dining room with a large living room and two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Accessed at raised ground floor level via a magnificent curved stone staircase with cast iron decorative balusters topped with a mahogany handrail. The staircase was in poor condition and was missing some parts and had been partially removed at 2nd floor level. Missing parts were created by taking castings from original iron balusters and commissioned a matching wreathed and ramped mahogany handrail. Paul Cocksedge Studio designed an ethereal ceramic sculpture to fall through the complete stairwell.

Description:
The tight site for this new Wandsworth house is fairly typical of the challenging back land sites London architects deal with. Will Caradoc-Hodgkins of 4D Studio liked the site so much he also built his own home on it! Having originally designed and built the main house for previous clients on the site that is bound on three sides by a school and existing houses, our residential architects and interior designers were asked to radically alter the interior to suit the differing needs of the new owners, an artist and an antiques dealer. They had specific requirements to display their collection of 20th century furniture and an important art collection. The answer to the restrictions posed by the site have led Will to develop a design with large areas of roof glazing to compensate for the lack of available light from two sides. The central area of the house is overlooked by a dramatic balcony which leads to a large study. The ground floor is lit to great effect from above by a vast sloping glazed roof. Roof glazing was also used to great effect over the bathrooms. On the ground floor the original polished concrete flooring was covered by a matt poured resin surface with under floor heating to get greater light reflection for the art and furniture.

Description:
n a spectacular site in the Borough of Richmond opposite the entrance to Hampton Court Palace grounds and next to the Grade 1 Bushy Park residential architects at 4d Studio have had their proposals for a five bedroom house and a block of 4 luxury flats granted full planning consent. The proposals are to convert the existing fire-damaged Building of Townscape Merit to a high-end house comprising extensive basement and three upper floors linked by a lift. Generous terraces and a courtyard will provide private recreational areas on this prominent site. The Lion Gate was once part of a grand design drawn up on behalf of King William and Queen Mary by Sir Christopher Wren. A period of austerity prevented the plans proceeding until later gardeners were able to lay out the Chestnut Avenue to Wren’s design and leading to the Lion Gate. These proposals will stand to one side of the Gate and offer fine views of the Park and Palace. 4D Studio have worked in Richmond for many years, This is one of several projects that as Richmond architects 4D Studio have undertaken in the Borough of Richmond. Others include schemes in Hampton Hill, Teddington and Richmond itself. Over time we have successfully established relationships with the Richmond planning authorities, amenity groups and local residents. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are considering a project in the area. We are the ideal choice of architect and would be pleased to hear from you.
