Description:
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING LABORATORIES AT NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY Phase 1 of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Building at Nottingham University was designed to accommodate the research department of Sir Peter Mansfield, awarded the Nobel Prize for the invention of the MRI Scanner. The magnets used in the MRI process demanded the use of non ferrous construction in their immediate area, where timber and stainless steel was used. They create magnetic fields contained within oval shaped areas bounded by gauss lines, which increase in size with the power of the particular magnet, and which need to be kept secure from intruders who might be adversely affected by the magnetic forces. The magnet laboratories are therefore accommodated in separate wings to the main building. Within the main building are offices and meeting spaces for researchers together with smaller laboratories. Phase 2 was constructed to provide additional space for research and a laboratory for the world's third largest magnet. We have carried out other research, teaching and sports building projects at Warwick, Nottingham, Birmingham and Coventry Universities. Description:
NEW SPORTS HALL AND GYMNASIUM The Sports Hall for King Henry VIII School, Coventry was designed with our Joint Venture Partner Richard S Baily. The brief from the Clients was to provide a hall suitable for indoor hockey, badminton and cricket with a climbing wall facility. In addition a gymnasium with facilities for dance was to be included together with appropriate changing, showering and toilet accommodation. The design continues the main sports hall roof over the changing area and locates the gymnasium on the mezzanine created above. The school is in a Conservation Area and the materials used in the building are brickwork to match the existing buildings with oak boarding above door height and a corrugated metal roof. We have also worked at King Henry VIII School on a new Art Department, CDT Department, and Sixth Form Centre and have carried out an Access Audit. We increased our expertise in design for sport when John Viner worked for a year with Sport England monitoring the submissions for Sports Hall grants under the New Opportunities Fund £60m programme for the West Midlands which was delivered through school projects. We have worked on a number of Sports Hall projects for Higher and Further Education, Schools, and Sports Clubs, including Coventry University, Warwickshire College, King Edward Schools Foundation Birmingham, Coventry Rugby Club, Nuneaton Rugby Club and Warwick Racing Football Club.
