Description:
The house is built as a replacement dwelling in Green Belt in Alderley, Cheshire. The house seeks to define a modern aesthetic for a traditional cottage form. The project includes an ancillary building containing a swimming pool, gym and photographic studio (built under permitted development rights). The pool is located away from the house to ensure clear views into the garden and the uninterrupted countryside beyond. The arrangement of house and pool create an informal garden enclosure which forms a transitional paved terrace area leading into the less formal landscaping. Extensive glazing at ground floor level allows flexible interaction between house, pool and garden. A more free flowing timber form houses a gym which is clad in timber to link the building into its context. The main focus of the house is its roof. A simple structure of timber and steel allows the roof to float over the forms of the house. The spaces in the house are planned to maximise the view of the garden, with the elevation to public courtyard more solid in its elevation and forms.

Description:
The house was commissioned by a private developer to design a house of exceptional design quality for contemporary family living. The design uses traditional house form but maintains a contemporary appearance. This is achieved predominantly using materials such as zinc and timber, together with extensive use of glass which breaks down the form of the brick. Internally the spaces fuse together to create inspiring spaces that make full use of light and views at every opportunity. The house includes a pool, spa, sauna and gymnasium.

6: Project NameKamiros
Dates: 2008 - (ongoing)

Gross Area: 250 to 499 sqm
Sectors:
Houses and Housing - One-off Houses

Key Services:
Feasibility Studies,  Full Architectural Service,  Materials Advice,  Planning Advice,  Planning Applications

Description:
A single family house located in Alderley with views out to the green belt, Kamiros nestles into the hillside following the road up top the edge. The demolition of the existing house gives the freedom and flexibility to allow the new house to resolve the level changes across the site and become not only a home, but a way through the site. Traditional materials such as brick and timber are used in a mix of traditional and contemporary forms. The plan of the building is arranged as three bays which in turn sets up the rhythm for the roofscape. Large areas of glazing open up to the rear to make the most of the excellent views to the green belt and provide depth to the building - diffusing its impact on the context. The brief required an inversion of the normal house spatial arrangement placing the main living/dining area down at garden level with the formal area at entry level. This arrangement of spaces and the clarity of the formal dining will be an effective contrast to the natural vistas across the green belt. The building uses reclaimed oak timber framing and timber sourced from sustainable sources. It’s the client’s vision that materials for the house be sourced locally, to reduce the environmental impact of the construction process.

What House Award Winner 2014
Description:
This is a development of high quality family homes. The client's commitment to good design has created a new and positive contribution to the area whilst still complementing the existing residential context. The houses are well proportioned, using a pitched roof with single storey extension to the side which ensures that the design references traditional house forms. In acknowledgment of existing surrounding properties the development uses a limited palette of robust materials of red brick, stone features, zinc cladding and aluminium window framing. Depth is brought to the elevations by the use of deep reveals with the windows being set within the brickwork to enhance the contrast of light and shade.
