Description:
This project involved the refurbishment and extension of a post-war semi-detached house in Islington North London. It is SCALA architects Managing Director's own house. The original house was designed by Louis de Soissons, the architect best known for his buildings in Welwyn Garden Suburb. The house lies in the Canonbury Conservation area and there were complex discussions with the local authority planning and conservation officers. SCALA were able to persuade the council that the high quality design, materials and detailing would be an enhancement to the conservation area and planning consent was obtained in February 2008, with work starting on site the following month. The house was completely gutted, with the roof also being removed. An additional room was also added in the roof space. The house was also extended at ground floor level to the side and rear. Large sliding glass doors to the rear connect the house to the garden and create a family living area that is well used.

Description:
The client, Simon Johnson, a Senior Partner at Davis Langdon, wanted an extension to his existing, detached family home in Pinner that better connected the house to the extensive, mature garden. The new extension replaced an existing brick structure and is designed to accomodate the nearby trees and existing shrubbery and borders. Nadi Jahangiri had previously worked with the client, whilst working at Foster and Partners on a variety of projects. Planning was achieved in August 2004 within 8 weeks. The extensive use of glazing coupled with high thermal performance envelope has created a comfortable space with spectacular views of the extensive gardens.

Description:
Based in the heart of the Arlington Conservation area in the London Borough of Islington, this house re-fit is for a private client. The planners were initially reluctant to allow a non-contextual addition to the rear of the property but we were able to persuade the conservation officers that a high quality modern development would enhance rather than detract from the existing terrace. The owner, who is a research scientist for a major pharmaceutical company, had originally intended to add a small conservatory to the rear of the house. As the design developed, and with the input of the client, an additional storey was added, the extension grew in scale and ambition and the entire house was re-fitted.

Description:
This project was for the design of a single storey, glazed rear extension to a Victorian family house in the heart of the Highbury Fields Conservation area in Islington, North London. A glass canopy covers the old bin store to the side of the old extension, re-connecting the space with the kitchen. The entire rear of the house is then supported on 2 steel beams that allow the complete opening up of the garden level. Designed to link the small patio garden back into the house by using large sliding glass doors, the project unlocks the use of the house for a young and modern family.

Description:
A project for Building Design magazine at the time of the 2005 General Election. Interest and participation in politics is diminishing. Voter apathy is on the rise. All the major parties want to increase the proportion of voters. In any General Election, only a relatively small number of seats change hands between parties. Once elected, the job is more or less guaranteed for the duration of the parliament which can be up to 5 years. The idea that Greens, Anarchists or Animal Rights people have a say in the democratic process is an illusion. A 3rd legislative chamber. Any voter who actually casts their vote is issued with a ticket and can choose to be entered into a prize draw. This will immediately increase voter participation. The voter is entered into the draw (using National Lottery technology) and 1 minute after the polls close, the 98 randomly selected winners are announced. They are the first M3Ps (Members of the 3rd Parliament). The prize is 100,000 and a 6 month stint as a Peoples Representative in the 3rd Chamber (sponsored by Big Brother). Each M3P has to come up with an idea for a new law. At the end of the 6 month service the M3Ps vote on the best one and the winners idea is passed to the Commons for enacting into Law. The Commons must make the winning proposal into Law. The Building The building is an open, transparent structure that is accessed by boat and sits along the line of the Thames directly opposite the Houses of Parliament. The rooms of the M3Ps are glazed open cells that look across to the HP through an EFTE skin and accessed from the rear via a walkway. The building acts as a permanent and constant reminder of the electorate. After 6 months the M3Ps are released and the building reverts to a hotel.
